Finishing for Matt

This was going to be another post about bagging another marathon after running Blackpool on Sunday along with fellow 10in10ers David Green and Sean Warburton.

But tragically something happened in the heat of London Marathon held on the same day that completely overshadowed anything achieved in the wider running community.

Matt Campbell, 29-year-old chef and marathoner, collapsed just 3.7 miles from the finish line in the London Marathon and very sadly died all too young. He was running to raise money for the Brathay Trust in memory of his father Martin Campbell.

Martin was photographer for the 2008 Brathay Windermere Marathon and became an integral part of the team as filmmaker for the Brathay 10in10 each year, capturing the highs and lows of all those who took on what myself and 19 others will also tackle in a few weeks.

Martin very sadly passed away in July 2016, but the infectious enthusiasm, energy and empathy he shared with everyone he came into contact with will be long remembered. He was a uniquely inspirational and positive person who will live on in the memories of so many people.

So it is indescribably upsetting that his son Matt, a humble and genuine man doing something selfless to help honour his dad and the charity he loved, has now also sadly passed away. His family and wider Brathay family are understandably heartbroken at this time.

The media and public response by thousands has already been phenomenal, and the Campbell family are actively encouraging Brathay and it's supporters to use Matt’s legacy to help improve the lives of hundreds of disadvantaged children and young people.

Please give whatever you can to Brathay either directly through Matt's JustGiving page or my own.
